Time for a Bit of Change

May 1st, 2010

So oddly enough I’m getting this strange itch to make some changes and tweakage what Jabloggy is all about.  First, I’ve updated my categories to bits.  (I can hear you now: Wooooow, that’s quite a change…. Ya Jaloser).  It’s not much, but it kind of helps if I plan on trying to blog more often with less content per post in the future, kind of like “bit blogging” (yay, I coined a new Web 3.0 term!).

But I really feel Jabloggy has more potential and needs a swift kick in the pants, so right now it’s just a personal blog with bits from me that come from things around me.  What I will be changing will give Jabloggy some more substance and a purpose.

Today, friends, a personal blog.  Tomorrow, friends, a tech blog.  But not just any tech blog.  More on that soon… ;)

So what I’m thinking is that this will be the final Jabloggy post in its current state.  I will be doing the changes soon after a few other things in my life settle down (it’s music awards season again and I just put my condo on the market, wanna buy it?  Move to Madison. :) ).

Don’t worry, I’m not going to totally go straight and unfunny with the new format, no matter how many of you want me to drop the bad humor.  No no, I will keep some fun in this blog.  However I will be able to write more often and with more substance in a “different kind of tech blog”.

For now, feel free to follow Jabloggy on Facebook and Twitter.  See you soon!

iPad: What the Geeks Aren’t Getting

April 5th, 2010

I feel it be my duty to join the discussion (or online whining, if you don’t want to sugar coat the truth) about the iPad and what it is.  When I read tech blogs, websites and articles all I see from techies is what it can’t do.  Well how about what it can do and what it’s really meant for.  Listen up geeks and techies: the iPad isn’t really meant for you.

Everyone is bitching about what the iPad can’t do, how it’s only another fad gadget and that it won’t last because it doesn’t do all these great things.  I got four words for you people: SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE.  Apple’s intended audience for the iPad isn’t the IT department or code monkeys, although I’ll admit that’s pretty much unavoidable (they want to play with it of course!).  No, the intended audience for the iPad is the average Joe and every Tom, Dick and Harry that’s not into technology.  The iPad is the first anti-geek gadget (except for the iPhone, which could be in the same category).

The iPad is a basic way to consume content in today’s world.  Newspapers are dying, physical books are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  My grandma should be the one purchasing an iPad to consume her papers, her magazines, her books, her news, her email, her video, her everything.  The iPad is not a complicated device.  There are no extensions, no files, no folders, no software to install via CD-ROM.  NONE OF THAT TECHIE STUFF THAT’S FOREIGN TO THESE PEOPLE.  When you turn the iPad on, you have your books, content and apps delivered to you via the Wal-Mart of software, the App Store.  The basics are there, the ease of use is there, the technology is less scary.

So I say again: GEEKS OF THE WORLD!  The iPad is not for you.  It’s for your mother, your grandparents, your kids, and the Amish.

In conclusion, as the great Moss Puppet says: SHUT UP.

GTD = DUH

March 31st, 2010

Ok, so every now and then I come across this “fancy” and “innovative” way to check things off your to do list, called Getting Things Done (GTD).  It was invented by some old guy who thinks he stumbled across something that no one has thought of before.

Here’s the problem with this.  Basically his methods focus on creating a mixture of using folders for each day of the month, or creating lists so you don’t keep things in your head.  I hate to say this, but isn’t this just common sense?  Did this moron actually get famous and a “genius” reputation for actually suggesting people use common sense?

I’VE BEEN KEEPING LISTS AND STAYING STRESS FREE LIKE THIS FOR YEARS!!  You mean to tell me I could have merely suggested this to people, created a website, booked a handful of seminars, wrote a book, and spilled basic knowledge to all of mankind and I could have made a living doing this years ago?!?!!?!?

Maybe it’s just me, but this is a HUGE WTF for me.  Sorry David dude, but you’re not really promoting anything new, just apparently reminding people they have a brain and making yourself look like a huge dud.

This post isn’t meant to insult anyone, especially if this method of doing things never actually occurred to you.  I’m just really frustrated by the fact that this is so basic and so easy.  WAIT!  I KNOW!  I’m going to create a website, book seminars and write books about how to clean your office.  I’m going to call it Getting Things Filed.  Or WAIT, better yet: Getting Things Shredded.  It’s a stretch I know, but if this crazy old fart can do it, it can’t be that hard, can it?

Google: Just Say No To IE6!

February 4th, 2010

Two words sum up this post: HELL YEAH. :)

Earlier this week I received an email from Google regarding my Google Apps account (as I’m sure all of you Apps users did) and it delivered some of the best and geekiest news ever to be uttered by a large company: Google will be phasing out support for Internet Explorer 6 in their products over the course of 2010.

Now those of you who aren’t as geeky and techy are probably like, “WTF dude?  Who really freakin’ cares?!”  Well, those geeks and techies driving innovation and pushing for the future of our planet care!  With the world finally dropping support for this POS we are successfully able to roll out better, brighter and faster technology to our websites, making the web a better place for all and the devices that you are now using to access it, including that sexy new iPad. :)

So to all the Microsofts of the world, I have one thing to say: Pick up your shit and get the hell outta here!  Don’t like the door hit you on the way out.  Some of us are trying to bring the future to society, and your crappy ass products are slowin’ us down!

This One’s For You Lacey (1984-2010)

January 29th, 2010

Those of you who read this thing I call a blog regularly know that rarely am I serious.  So consider this my first serious post.  Yesterday, our family suffered a major loss and everyone that was touched by her lost an amazing friend.  Yesterday, around 4:00pm, my cousin Lacey lost her long, incredible battle with leukemia.

I’ll admit we weren’t extremely close.  We didn’t do everything together.  We shared the occasional laugh and conversation here and there, but she was family.  Close family.  And waaaayy too young family.

I remember she was the spunk in our family events, being the sole supplier of bubbliness and happiness for the evening’s festivities.  She was the “evil” whip cracking boss for the family at Jacoby Custom Cues where she worked.  She was always the friendly face of the company when they traveled to Las Vegas for the billiards expo shows.  She cared about everyone and put her family and friends before her.  She was a hard worker.  She was lovable.  She was the up when you were down.  She was full of life and loved life.  She was…. an extraordinary “superhuman”.

Even right now, I can remember her hearty, giggly laugh.  I can remember the wonderful sound of her slightly nasally voice. :)  I remember her ability to live every day to the fullest, like it was her last.  You could see the obvious joy she brought to her sisters, her brother, her mom and her dad.  Their eyes would light up whenever she was around.

At this point, all we can do is look towards the future and continue on with our lives.  That’s what Lacey would have wanted for us, because she was selfless and wanted everyone around her to be as happy and as content with life as she was.  We can go forward now knowing she’s in a better place, where there is no pain and she can still partake in our daily activities through our hearts and our minds.

So if you’re reading this and you were one of those touched by Lacey in her short time with us, feel free to post below with how she touched your life and how you will always remember her.

We will miss you Lacey.  You will remain with us through thick and thin, and when the time comes, God will allow us to be together again for the long haul.  Love you kiddo.

What Else Can An iPad Do?

January 27th, 2010

Is it a feminine product?

Is it a cool, hip, stylish apartment unit?

Is it a chair cushion with USB technology?

Is it a notebook with Firewire?  (and by notebook I mean an actual paper notebook from the 90’s, not a laptop; hilarious blast from the past, I know!)

Guess what?!  It’s none of those things!  It’s a giant iPhone that you need bigger pants to put it in!  Honestly, I see its potential in niche markets (home theater control center, security center, smart home dashboard, competitor to the Amazon Kindle, etc.) but as a general web browsing computer with which to make spreadsheets and slideshow presentations?!  Aww, snap!  Oh no he didn’t!

I guess this is the first Apple product I’m a little skeptical about, but I suppose we’ll see if Jobs and the bloodhound gang can do it again, eh?
